Eulogy for the Love of Reading

We are gathered here today, teachers & students, faculty and staff alike, to mourn the loss of a subject that had been getting weaker and weaker as the years flew by. No one was supposed to have seen this coming but alas, even faithful companions will soon lose the strength they once boasted about. Of course, Reading wasn’t always this fragile before its death. In the past, children used to flock to books like a herd of cows running across the field, eager to devour a story of their choosing. But now, with all these constant textbook assignments and these puzzling words students in middle school are supposed to decipher have made this generation lose their love of reading.

One by one, students began to grow a mutual dislike towards the written word. Reading, of course, didn’t understand why these formerly faithful students would suddenly not visit the classroom library in the same manner they did when they were children. Reading was confused and heartbroken. If only someone could show them the power and creativity one could have with a book in their hand. But alas, no one stepped up to the plate. This is how Reading came to an end. Alone, in a chilly classroom with no one to keep them company as life slowly drifted from its body. I want everyone to hear to know that Reading would not want us to mourn this loss but to look at this as a lesson. We need to teach our children that reading is a valuable stepping stone towards their future. Knowing what to look for underneath the surface can become an important tool later on in college as well as the real world. Reading may have left us physically but it has not left our conscience. May Reading rest in peace.
